Project Description
THE CLIENT – PENSORD PRESS
Based in Pontllanfraith, near Blackwood in South Wales, Pensord operates out of a 50,000 square foot of factory space, specifically designed for the short-run sheet-fed controlled circulation magazine market. This fully equipped plant operates 24/7 and is where 150 Pensord People, expertly produce the 400 regular publications.
THE CHALLENGE
Pensord’s power factor correction sat at 0.89 across the site. However, due to modern loads and harmonics the existing standard type power factor correction could not just be renewed within the existing confines of the switchboard. Our challenge was to upgrade the power factor to detuned, which meant the addition of filter reactors in series with the capacitors.
THE SOLUTION
AS Power Engineering Ltd won the project based on our ability to engineer the solution within the existing parameters of the space available to us. We installed 250 Kvar of detuned power factor correction, we installed filter reactors in a separate fan cooled enclosure due to available space.
THE RESULTS
- A client saving of over £5000 per annum
- The elimination of £1200 in reactive power charges
- Improved power factor from 0.89 to 1.00
- Reduction in climate charge levy
- Significant reduction in carbon emissions
